Budget

The Budget Page provides full visibility into Snowflake spend by grouping usage into domains and comparing it against assigned budgets. With flexible rules, live charts, and clear summaries, you can attribute spend, track trends, and manage costs proactively.

Key Concepts

Domains

Domains are rule-based groupings of Snowflake spend, defined by users and/or warehouses. They determine how usage is attributed across your organization.

  • Domains are evaluated top to bottom.

  • If spend matches more than one domain, it is attributed to the highest domain in the list.

  • Spend is never double-counted - each query belongs to exactly one domain.

  • Drag and drop to reorder domains and adjust their priority.

Budgets

Budgets are monthly targets assigned to domains.

  • Track how much of the budget has been consumed at any point in the month.

  • Workloads continue to run even if a budget is exceeded (no operational impact).

  • Budgets can also be set to Unlimited, letting you monitor spend without defining a cap.

This provides financial clarity without restricting your teams.

Unallocated Spend

When spend does not match any domain, it is grouped under Unallocated.

  • Ensures that all spend is always captured.

  • Reviewing Unallocated helps you refine rules or create new domains.

  • Over time, this category should shrink as you add domains.

Unallocated often highlights new workloads or one-off queries that may need their own domain.

Visualizations

The Budget Page provides several real-time views:

  • Budget Spend Overview - A monthly snapshot of total spend compared to aggregate budgets.

  • Monthly Budget vs. Spend - Breakdown with indicators for each domain (on track / exceeded).

  • Spend Breakdown by Category - Distribution of spend across domains and Unallocated.

  • Daily Spend Braekdown - Usage patterns day by day, helpful for spotting spikes.

  • 30-Day Historical Preview - When editing a domain, a live chart shows the last 30 days of spend. This updates instantly as you adjust rules, so you can validate before saving.

Date Controls

Use the date selector in the top-right to adjust your view:

  • By default, the current month is shown.

  • You can move back to review previous months, compare seasonal activity, or analyze historical patterns.
